Buxton Junior School pupils have enjoyed visits to the Open Centre in Derby to learn about worship in different faiths. We believe that it is important for our pupils to acquire an appreciation of and respect for other cultures as well as their own. Year 4 pupils visited the Open Centre on 29th February 2016 and visited Hindu, Muslim and Sikh places of worship.
Colleagues from the Open Centre also visited our school during Spring 2015 and led an interactive assembly about the Jewish festival of Hannukkah. Later in the term, year 3 pupils were treated to story telling sessions as part of Chinese New Year celebrations.
In June and November 2015 and September 2016, the informative Heritage display about different families and their religions was installed in school for a week. Pupils learnt about the daily experiences of families who followed different faiths including Christianity, Judaism and Islam.
On 21st September 2016, we had a visit from a monk from our local Buddhist centre.
A visitor from the Open Centre will be delivering workshops on asian cookery and Islam to lower junior classes on 24th November 2016.
Year 4 pupils will be visiting different places of worship in Derby on 2nd February 2017.
Upper Junior pupils will be learning about Judaism in the Spring term 2017 and Open Centre visitors will be delivering workshops on Passover.
